Best Practice

  • Be familiar with the types of reports available through Piwik: As soon as your website goes live with CivicPlus, it is automatically configured to send analytics data to Piwik at analytics.civicplus.com.
  • Configure your Piwik dashboard: Once you login to Piwik, a dashboard will already be configured with some default widgets that should be useful to you. You can configure and customize the Dashboard further by dragging and dropping current widgets, or adding new widgets, by using the Widgets & Dashboard drop-down at the top.
  • Establish a check-in rate: You can check in on your analytics as often as you like, but it’s best to gauge how quickly your community changes and your staff updates the website and find a sensible check-in rate that works for you. In some cases that could be weekly, in other cases it could just be a couple times a year. We recommend you check in with Piwik quarterly until you find what works best for your community.
  • Set up timely email reports: If your community moves quickly, or you’re generally too busy to remind yourself to check in manually, reports can serve as a reminder when you need to report in with co-workers periodically, or if you need to monitor a particular set of pages, perhaps using Piwik segments, on a regular basis. If you’re already comfortable checking in on your own, it’s probably not necessary to configure. Otherwise, we recommend setting up a report for every month.
  • Use date ranges up to the day before the current date: We “archive,” as Piwik calls it, the traffic data from your website on a nightly basis. This process takes raw data gathered throughout the day and processes it so that it is easier to understand. This means that the data for the current date will not be complete until the day after it is collected. Make sure to only use date ranges up to the day before the current date, or else you’ll see unexpected results.
