Inside Converge, there are three possible settings for debit cards:
- None: This means that when a user is checking out with EMV they will be prompted to select Visa Debit or US Debit. US Debit asks for a PIN and runs the transaction as a debit. Selecting Visa Debit will run it as a credit transaction and no PIN will be requested.
- Common: This means it uses the card type to automatically detect
- Global: This runs all debit cards as credit and does not ask for PINs.
When making your selection you need to weigh the impact to your business, based on your business needs.
Voiding Transactions
When a transaction runs as debit, it cannot be voided. All debit cards processed through eCommerce (Converge’s Hosted Payment Pages) are automatically run as credit and can be voided. If you attempt to void an EMV debit transaction, you will receive the error, 5001: The transaction ID is invalid for this transaction type. This only happens when using the settings “None” or “Common”.
If you are using “None” and want to avoid this error, you will need to instruct your users to select “Debit {card type}” at checkout. You can also update your debit settings to Global.
Updating Your Debit Preferences
You will have to call Elavon’s support to update your Debit settings (it is not a setting made available in the user interface). When you call them, for example, you can say, “I would like to update my EMV debit preference to global”. Elavon will know what to do.
