Accessibility Updates

Hidden Headings

We've removed hidden heading elements from navigation blocks across Web Open sites. Previously, headings like "Primary tabs," "Header links," and "Pagination" were visually hidden but still present in the page structure. This meant screen readers and other assistive technology would announce these headings during navigation, creating confusion. Users heard headings that didn't correspond to anything visible on the page.

With this update:

  • Hidden headings have been removed

  • Navigation elements now use aria-labels

    • Derived from the original heading text, so assistive technology still identifies each navigation region without cluttering the heading structure.

  • Heading-based navigation is now cleaner

    • Users who navigate by heading will only encounter headings that match what sighted users see on the page.

This change ensures that assistive technology users get a more predictable, less confusing experience when navigating sites built on Web Open.

Alerts Markup

To improve site clarity and accessibility, the Emergency Alerts section will now only appear when an alert is actually enabled. If there are no active alerts, the section will be completely removed from the page layout, making your site cleaner and reducing unnecessary page elements for both editors and visitors. This change ensures a more predictable and streamlined editing and viewing experience.
