State Plane Coordinate Entry

Prev Next

By default, you'll use WGS 84 as the coordinate system when manually entering geometry for point-based assets. WGS 84 (EPSG: 4326) is the gold standard for storing and entering coordinates; please review the Coordinate Systems and Web Maps article for more information. With WGS 84, you enter coordinates as latitude (y-axis) and longitude (x-axis).

If your organization uses a state plane coordinate system, you can enter geometry using that instead. State plane systems flatten the Earth's surface, which lets you capture highly accurate data within a local area. However, because they don't account for the Earth's ellipsoid shape, they become less accurate over long distances. There are over 100 state plane coordinate systems covering the United States.

Important Notes

  • If you would like to use this feature, please work with your implementation consultant or our technical support team to configure your system. If possible, please provide the name or ESPG code of the coordinate system you want to use.

  • Coordinate entry only works for point-based assets.

  • If you enter a coordinate beyond your map extents, you will get an error.

Instructions

  1. Sign In to Asset Management

  2. Open the asset’s geometry or create a new asset

  3. View the asset’s Geometry Editing Modal
Map interface showing coordinates entry and location options for navigation purposes.

  4. Click the Edit button
Map interface showing the highlighted edit button.

    Note:

Click Clear All if editing an existing asset:

  5. Click the Coordinate System dropdown
Manual entry form for coordinates with the coordinate system dropdown menu highlighted.

  6. Select your coordinate system
Manual entry interface for selecting coordinate systems.

  7. Enter the Northing coordinate in the latitude field
    Manual entry latitude coordinates field.

    Note:

This is the y-axis of the map.

  8. Enter the Easting coordinate in the longitude field
    Manual entry longitude coordinates field.

    Note:

This is the x-axis of the map.

  9. Click Submit
    Highlighted submit button.

  10. The map should move, and a yellow dot should appear at the location you entered

    Note:

If you enter a coordinate beyond the map extent, the map will not update.
