Fixed: Events occur at regular, predetermined intervals based on the calendar (example: every Monday, the 1st of each month, quarterly). This is best for time-sensitive events or compliance-related checks that must occur regardless of usage.
Floating: Events are scheduled based on the last completed date of the previous event; the next due date "floats" depending on when the last event was done.
For example, a piece of equipment is serviced every 30 days after the last service was completed. If a service is delayed, the next one shifts forward accordingly.
