Create & Manage Event Categories

Resident users searching for events in the Public Portal and staff users searching for events in the Events module can filter by event category to narrow their search results. This article will guide you through how to create, edit, delete, and reorder event categories.

Important Notes

  • By default, event categories are displayed in the Public Portal's Event Categories dropdown and the Events module Category filter according to the order in which they were created; the system does not alphabetize them automatically. If you would like to have the event categories appear in a particular order, you will need to manually reorder them.

  • All event templates must be assigned an event category.

Create an Event Category

  1. Sign in to the system if you have not already

  2. Navigate to the User Menu, then select the Settings option:The User Menu with the Settings option highlighted.

  3. Click the Events and Public Portal tile:The Events and Public Portal tile with a calendar icon on the Site Settings page.

  4. Click the Events tile:The Events tile with a calendar icon.

  5. Scroll down to the Events Categories section:The Events Categories section on the Events page.

  6. Click the New Event Category button:The white, rectangular New Event Category button, which appears to the right of the Events Categories heading and the Edit Order button.

  7. Enter a Category Description for the event category:The Category Description text box.

    Note:

    The category description will be used as the category's "name" in the Public Portal and the Events module.

  8. Click the Add New Event Category button:The green, rectangular Add New Event Category button in the lower-right corner of the New Event Category dialog box.

  9. The new event category has been added

Edit an Event Category

  1. Sign in to the system if you have not already

  2. Navigate to the User Menu, then select the Settings option:The User Menu with the Settings option highlighted.

  3. Click the Events and Public Portal tile:The Events and Public Portal tile with a calendar icon on the Site Settings page.

  4. Click the Events tile:The Events tile with a calendar icon.

  5. Scroll down to the Events Categories section:The Events Categories section on the Events page.

  6. Click the Edit tool (purple pencil icon) to the right of the event category you wish to edit:An example Edit button.

  7. Edit the Category Description for the event category as desired:The Category Description text box.

    Note:

    The category description will be used as the category's "name" in the Public Portal and the Events module.

  8. Click the Save Changes button:A green, rectangular Save Changes button in the lower-right corner of the Edit Event Category dialog box.

  9. The event category has been edited

Delete an Event Category

  1. Sign in to the system if you have not already

  2. Navigate to the User Menu, then select the Settings option:The User Menu with the Settings option highlighted.

  3. Click the Events and Public Portal tile:The Events and Public Portal tile with a calendar icon on the Site Settings page.

  4. Click the Events tile:The Events tile with a calendar icon.

  5. Scroll down to the Events Categories section:The Events Categories section on the Events page.

  6. Click the Delete tool (red trash can icon) to the right of the event category you wish to delete:An example Delete button.

  7. Click the Delete Event Category button on the Delete Event Category pop-up that appears to confirm the deletion:The Delete Event Category button on the Delete Event Category popup.

  8. The event category has been deleted

Reorder Event Categories

  1. Sign in to the system if you have not already

  2. Navigate to the User Menu, then select the Settings option:The User Menu with the Settings option highlighted.

  3. Click the Events and Public Portal tile:The Events and Public Portal tile with a calendar icon on the Site Settings page.

  4. Click the Events tile:The Events tile with a calendar icon.

  5. Scroll down to the Events Categories section:The Events Categories section on the Events page.

  6. Click the Edit Order button:The white, rectangular Edit Order button to the right of the Events Categories heading.

  7. Click and hold the grid icon next to the event categories you wish to move, then drag and drop them into the desired order:An example event category being dragged and dropped from one place in the Event Categories list to another.

  8. Click the Save Changes button:The green, rectangular Save Changes button in the lower-right corner of the Edit Order dialog box.

  9. The event categories have been reordered
