Link a News Flash Item to a Web Address

This article will show you how to direct News Flash items, including item title, image, RSS, and "Read On..." links in News Flash widgets, Module screens, and notifications to point to any Web Address on your site or external Web Address without users first having to visit the News Flash item.

Important Note:

This option is default-true.

Instructions

  1. Sign in to your site

  2. Navigate to Modules and on the Content tab, select News Flash:The Modules drop-down menu with the Content tab and News Flash options highlighted.

  3. Select the desired category:The News Flash module viewed from the back-end with the Announcements category highlighted.

  4. Click Add Item or edit an existing item The News Flash module in a category with the Add Item button highlighted.

  5. Fill out the Link fields The News Flash Add Item screen with the Link fields and checkbox toggles are displayed.

    • Web Address: Enter a URL, either to your site or to an external web address

      Note:

      This option is item-based, so the link will use the web address on all News Flash widgets and the Alert Bar for this item.

    • Display Text: Enter display text for the web address. This is the text that users will click on to visit the web address

    • Open in new window: Select to open the web address in a new window

    • Link item, image, read on, RSS and notifications to this Web Address: Check this box to redirect to the web address. This will make your news item an external link to your specified web address and will not link to the item’s details page.

      Note:

      If you do not check this option, the link will not be applied to the News Flash item, image, "Read On...", RSS, and notifications elements.

  6. You could also add a link to the Full Text field
    Text instructing users to visit the National Weather Service for more information.

  7. Complete other fields as needed to Add or Modify an item

  8. Scroll up and click Save or Save and Publish:The News Flash Add Item screen with the Save and Save and Publish buttons highlighted.

    • Save: Saves the current changes without publishing them to the front end

    • Save and Publish: Saves the current changes and publishes them to the front-end site

  9. Item titles, images, "Read on..." text, and notifications will now link to the web address:The front-end view of a News Flash, Emergency Alerts item for a Tornado Warning.

    Note:

    Display Text and Image will both link to the web address field under the Link section of the News Flash item, but links placed within the editor or anywhere else in the item will not.
