Important Note
- CivicPlus can help you with DNS hosting and the configuration of bindings. But, CivicPlus can not register the .gov domain for you.
- Remember to update your SEO and redirect information after transferring your domain.
How to Obtain
Visit the Get.gov website to get a .gov domain
DNS / Nameservers Information
During the .gov domain registration process, you will need to provide Nameservers. Nameservers are the servers used to host your DNS.
Some customers will choose CivicPlus to host their DNS and other customers will set up the DNS themselves using Cloudflare, GoDaddy, Network Solutions, AWS, or another DNS service.
To have CivicPlus host your DNS, please email CivicPlus DNS. We can then coordinate the setup process with your CSM and the CivicPlus DNS team.
Once everything is set up, the CivicPlus DNS Team will provide you with the Nameservers for the .gov registration.
If you are going to manage the DNS yourself, please email CivicPlus DNS. Then we can set up the bindings for the domain on the server side. The CivicPlus DNS Team will provide the DNS information to you, so the domain can point to your CivicPlus website.
Update Website Primary Domain Name Information
If you want your .gov domain to be your website's new Primary Domain, please email CivicPlus DNS. We can then coordinate the setup process with your CSM and the CivicPlus DNS team.
We recommend purchasing an SSL Certificate for your .gov domain if it is your Primary Domain. This keeps your current SSL Certificate, if you have one, on your current Primary Domain for at least 6 months. This gives you time to have your Google and other SEO results updated with the new .gov domain. During this time, your staff and residents can update their web browser favorites/bookmarks.
You can buy an SSL Certificate from CivicPlus or provide your own SSL Certificate. For more information and pricing, contact your Customer Success Manager.
It takes about 10 minutes for the CivicPlus DNS Team to update your Primary Domain. This update doesn't involve any downtime of your website.
